There are guidelines and regulations set by India's Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) to ensure the humane treatment of animals used in research. In this regard, the Central Animal House, the central facility of University of Kashmir, has been established for carrying out work on small experimental animals. The facility is registered, No: 801/GO/Re/S/03/CPCSEA, with CPCSEA now called “Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals” (CCSEA).
The Central Animal House (CAH) facility has a two-way corridor system to minimize any cross contamination. It has animal holding rooms, experimentation rooms and the quarantine area. There are individual ventilated cages for small animals where animals are well maintained Institution has a registered, functional Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) for clearing the research proposals involving animal work received from research scholars and faculty members of various science departments, especially the scholars from different specialization like Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bio-Technology, Bio-Chemistry, Clinical Bio-Chemistry, Zoology, Bioresources and CORD etc. The IAEC has to ensure that the experimental work on animals is carried out as per the standard operating procedures and CPCSEA guidelines.
It also has to focus on minimizing pain, distress and suffering of animals.
For carrying out work on small animals, a hard copy of Form B (available under Quick Links) is to be submitted with the Member secretary, IAEC at least two months before the proposed start of the experiment, for consideration of IAEC members.
